Domain authority (DA) is a metric that predicts how much a website could rank on Google's search results. It was developed by the company Moz<\/a> As part of its SEO tool, it is often seen as a substitute for Google's former PageRank. PageRank was an algorithm that Google<\/a> used to assess the quality and quantity of links to a particular page. Google stopped publicly updating PageRank in 2013 and completely removed it in 2016, after which Mooz's metric became a widely accepted alternative for assessing domain authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moz calculates domain authority by analysing multiple factors, notably the quality and quantity of incoming links. The collected data is processed using machine learning algorithms that determine the numerical value on a scale of 1 to 100. It is important to emphasize that domain authority is not an official Google ranking factor. Google does not use it in its algorithm and it does not directly influence the positions in search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 2019 Moz presented an improved version of the calculation called Domain Authority 2.0. The new model takes into account additional signals, including the link pattern, Moz spam score and certain data related to search results. The upgrade was introduced to better adapt the metric to changes in Google's algorithm and provide a more realistic estimate of the relative strength of the domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domain authority is most often used as a comparative metric. Its real value comes to light only when compared with competing sites or with its own results over a longer period of time. For example, if your site has a value of 40 and a competitive 20, there is a high probability that you have a stronger link profile and a better position in search results. On the other hand, the mere figure without context does not mean much. There is no universal \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d value \u2013 it only makes sense in relation to other pages in the same niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scoring system is based on a logarithmic scale, which means that it is easier to increase the value from 10 to 20 than from 60 to 70. As the number increases, more and more quality links are needed for each subsequent shift. Also, score 100 is not a realistic target for most pages, as only the largest global platforms with an extremely strong link profile approach this value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domain authority is influenced by several factors. The most important is the link profile, i.e. the number and quality of incoming links. Pages with many relevant and reliable sources tend to have a higher value, while engaging in dubious practices such as buying links can lead to a decline in results. As this is a relative metric, your value is also affected by the growth of other pages \u2013 especially large and authoritative domains. Changes in Moz's indexing, data availability, or algorithm may also cause oscillations in the displayed value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
