But Google also uses additional data\u2014most important among them is the alt text\u2014to better understand the content of the image. In fact, alt text is considered the most important attribute to provide additional information about the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Images with properly written alt text are more likely to appear in image search results and Google image carousel, which is a section on the search result page that displays images associated with the query.<\/p>\n\n\n

Alt text is essential for websites that want to rank better on Google's search results pages. To maximize the benefits of alt text and avoid common mistakes, follow the best practices below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Use descriptive alt texts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Google recommends that the alto text be as descriptive as possible. It should contain sufficient useful information on the image, including relevant keywords. It should also sound natural and be understandable to the human reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) recommends that a well-written alt text be descriptive enough to replace an image. In other words, the visitor should be able to understand the content of the image even if he does not see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Avoid overcrowding the alto text with keywords<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Google recommends adding alt text to each image. The only exception are paintings that serve purely decorative purposes. In these cases, use the so-called null alternative, e.g. alt=\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
